While Hollowtech II technology in the aluminum crankarms delivers significant weight savings without compromising stability, the Hollowglide construction handles this task for the large chainring, which is also made of aluminum. Additionally, plastic ribs on the back of the chainrings contribute to the unique structural design of the 105 series.
